Our Creative Director Jason Scarlatti shares his Ten Essentials for living well all autumn long. Ready for the Fall?

(C)reative Director Jason Scarlatti is the driving force behind 2(X)IST's effortless mix of high style-meets-high performance innerwear. For Fall 2011's Collections, the New Yorker's design influences run the gamut from extreme motocross (2(X)IST SPORT) to the Scottish Highlands (PLAID) to vintage cavalry uniforms (MILITARY). Here, Jason shares his own personal inspirations and resources for everyday living:

WARBY PARKER

THE RAINES LAW ROOM, NYC
"Out of all my favorite things for Fall 2011, this is the one I would want to keep secret." Modeled after a speakeasy, this parlor is extremely private. Guests enter through an unmarked door (calling ahead is suggested), but once inside, the intimate interior happily hosts a well-appointed clientele made even happier by expert mixologists ready to mix up lively libations. WALK IT OFF 
Usually when someone tells you to "take a hike," it's a bad thing. But for Scarlatti, it's a source of not only exercise but reflection. "I'm not blessed to be as fit as our 2(XI)ST models or nearly as dedicated to the gym, but I've realized that walking it out is good for the mind and the waistline." To that end, he likes to add leisurely weekend strolls along the Hudson River to his weekday commute to and from the office. "That's how I've gotten a lot of clarity on some 2(X)IST designs!"

Scarlatti received a pair of black studded Christian Louboutin loafers as a Best Man gift at close friend (and Creative Director at Playboy) Rebecca Szymczak's wedding. "I tend to dress in monochromatic colors, but these shoes are my perfect way to bring any classic ensemble to a noteworthy statement."

Scarlatti feels "romanced by the magical atmosphere" of the Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz-designed space inside this new downtown Manhattan hotel. "This is definitely a place where I feel relaxed and open and can let the creative juices flow. You never know what 2(X)IST designs will be inspired here!" (mondriansoho.com) 

THE METROPOLITAN ANYWHERE FIREPLACE

"There is no menu. You tell the servers of any food allergies or preferences, and then you lay in a giant white bed and enjoy the loud music, sexy atmosphere, and the avant-garde show put on by the staff." Avant-Garde, you say? Cut to Scarlatti's last go in Amsterdam, where he watched two "scantily clad females pour cereal all over each other." Got milk? (supperclub.com)

VELVET BLAZERS 
'I'm not sure if it was my obsession with 'The Velveteen Rabbit' or just the luxe, rich depth of the fabric, but there's a distinctive elegance to a velvet blazer." Scarlatti favors the slimmer-fitting variety in jewel tones, whether it's fully kitted out or casually paired with jeans and a 2(X)IST Deep V-Neck Tee. CLUB WIT'S END, NYC
On the last Saturday of each month, New York's Club Wit's End entertains those fond of Old Hollywood Glamour, getting dressed up (as in "Coat and Tie," gentleman), and Jazz. "You will get wrapped up in the elegance and flair of it all.  It feel like you went back in time (…or is that just the cocktails?)." (clubwitsend.com)

THE FALL MILITARY COAT 
Crisper temperatures beget proper outerwear and those accustomed to walking (see no.3) need to stay both protected and handsome. "I'm obsessed with the variety of coats from Christopher Bailey (of Burberry Prorsum, see right). From rich colors to small appointments like military stitching, these coats are tops." But Scarlatti keeps it grounded by sourcing from the chains. "As much as I love Burberry, I found a perfectly suitable coat at Uniqlo." (X)

Knotty by nature? Make your 2(X)IST SWIM drawstrings behave by learning the ropes on The 2(X)IST SWIM Knot.

(W)hen it comes to tying your 2(X)IST SWIM drawstrings, think "What Would A Sailor Do?". Make like a longshoreman and tie one on quickly but with certainty. After all, you wouldn't want to risk losing your suit bottoms and having your "first mate" out for everyone to see?

The trick is to find a knot that's secure—no "Wardrobe Malfunctions" here—but also easy-access for those all-important bathroom breaks in between swells. Many guys would settle for a standard shoelace-style tie-on, but 2XIST.COM Style Director Jay V. del Rosario suggests an alternative: The 2(X)IST SWIM Knot.

"This is my preferred way to tie drawstrings, since the final knot is compact and sturdy," he says. "In my opinion, a shoelace bow is too juvenile and precious on a man's swimsuit. Plus, wet bunny ears end up lopsided and, well, sad."

Best to hop to it and make your drawstrings shipshape and seaworthy (even if you're more of a pool guy).

THE ESSENTIALS: THE 2(X)IST SWIM KNOT
1) Even out the strings on your swimsuit
2) Tie a Standard Knot, crossing the right end over, then under the left side (just like the start of tying your shoelaces). You may repeat this step for an extra secure knot
3) Grab both ends with one hand, and loop both ends around your other hand's pointer finger
4) Pull both ends through the loop created on your pointer finger, forming a Slip Knot
5) Tighten the Slip Knot so it is secure, and straighten (if necessary)
6) Enjoy (X)
